Finance Minister Katayama Says FX Policy Stance “Completely Unchanged” After Japan-U.S. Coordinated Intervention — BigGo Finance

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said at a post-cabinet press conference on the morning of September 11 that Japan’s foreign exchange policy stance has remained “completely unchanged” since the Japan-U.S. coordinated intervention in late July. While reiterating the government’s commitment to “maintaining orderly currency markets,” she refrained from commenting on specific exchange rate levels.

Katayama also confirmed that Japan will continue close communication with the United States. “We will maintain close communication with the U.S. Treasury Department and work to ensure orderly foreign exchange markets,” she said at the press conference, indicating that there has been no change in policy stance since the two countries announced the coordinated intervention and joint statement.

When asked about U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s recent warning to investors holding yen-short positions, Katayama remarked, “He expressed his market views quite candidly. It is an extremely natural statement coming from someone with a hedge fund background.”

The Japanese and U.S. governments carried out coordinated intervention in late July to address sharp fluctuations in the yen exchange rate and issued a joint statement. Market views on the direction of the yen remain divided, and the authorities’ policy stance continues to be closely watched.
