Firefighters say a young man drowned at Thetis Lake on Friday evening.
View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst says the department was called to the lake around 6:15 p.m. for a report of a swimmer in distress.
However, by the time first responders arrived, the young man, who is believed to be a foreign exchange student, had already slipped underwater.
“Just a tragic, horrible event,” said Hurst. “Just horrible, just a tragedy.”
A BC RCMP spokesperson confirms officers were at the lake for a suspected drowning Friday evening. No further information was available at the time.
