A former varsity hockey player at St. Francis Xavier University has been committed to stand trial in Nova Scotia Supreme Court on a charge of aggravated assault.
Lane Brian Andrew Cormier, 24, of Hopewell, Pictou County, was arrested after a late-night altercation in downtown Antigonish last March that sent a man to hospital with critical injuries.
A preliminary inquiry was held Thursday in Antigonish provincial court for Cormier, who is represented by Halifax lawyer Stan MacDonald.
Six witnesses testified at the hearing in front of Judge Michael Sherar. There’s a publication ban on their evidence.
Cormier is scheduled to appear in Supreme Court in Antigonish on Jan. 4 to set dates for a judge-alone trial.
Antigonish RCMP responded to an incident on Main Street at about 11:15 p.m. on March 13. They said two men had gotten into an altercation after leaving a nightclub.
One of the men, a 21-year-old from Antigonish, was struck in the head and fell to the ground, police said.
The victim was transported to the local hospital, St. Martha’s Regional, and then airlifted to the Halifax Infirmary.
Cormier was a fourth-year aquatic resources student at St. F.X. at the time. He joined the hockey X-Men in 2017 and became an academic all-Canadian.
Before enrolling at St. F.X., Cormier played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Moncton Wildcats and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
