FOREX NEWS | Bank of Israel to sell $30 bln of forex to stabilise shekel amid Gaza war

The Bank of Israel said on Monday it will sell up to $30 billion of foreign currency in the open market, in the central bank’s first ever sale of foreign exchange, to maintain stability during Israel’s war with Palestinian militants in Gaza.

The move appeared to quickly calm the market as the shekel recovered from steep early losses.

Hong Kong stocks rose in the first few minutes of trade Monday afternoon following a healthy run-up on Wall Street at the end of last week, having been closed in the morning owing to a typhoon in the city.

The Hang Seng Index added 0.19 percent, or 32.54 points, to 17,518.52.

The Shanghai Composite Index dipped 0.38 percent, or 11.83 points, to 3,098.65 as investors returned from a week-long holiday, while the Shenzhen Composite Index on China’s second exchange eased 0.13 percent, or 2.53 points, to 1,907.75.

Palm jumps as crude oil rally fuels biodiesel demand hopes

Malaysian palm oil futures jumped on Monday after losing 4.4% last week as hopes grew that biodiesel demand would increase following a rally in crude oil prices.

The benchmark palm oil contract for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange rose 48 ringgit, or 1.33%, to 3,648 ringgit ($772.72) per metric ton by the midday break.
