Starliner check earlier than flying NASA astronauts

Boeing is ready to launch its Starliner capsule to the Worldwide Area Station for the primary time on Friday.

The launch is scheduled for six:36 a.m. ET from the launch advanced 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Drive Station in Florida. The capsule is being launched on high of an Atlas V rocket constructed by United Launch Alliance (ULA), the three way partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Whereas no folks will probably be contained in the capsule, the flight represents a key check in Boeing’s effort to construct a spacecraft able to flying NASA astronauts and cargo to the house station.

“That is what we dwell for, that is how we make aviation protected, that is how we make spaceflight protected,” NASA astronaut Mike Fincke stated in a press briefing earlier than the launch.

Each Boeing and SpaceX have been creating capsules for NASA’s Business Crew program, which is the company’s answer to finish reliance on Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Because the finish of the Area Shuttle program in 2011, astronauts have flown aboard Russian Soyuz.

In 2014, NASA awarded contracts to SpaceX for as much as $2.6 billion and Boeing for as much as $4.2 billion. Future Business Crew contracts can be up for grabs, as NASA would look to purchase seats on Boeing’s Starliner capsule and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. Delays have plagued the…
