Merging some district and county councils in England dangers “alienating” communities, the District Councils Community has warned.
It’s urging ministers to not implement proposals from the County Councils Community to scrap 213 smaller councils and exchange them with 25 bigger our bodies.
The county councils say their plan may save nearly £3bn over 5 years.
However the district councils say creating “huge all-purpose authorities” would “dilute the voice of residents”.
The federal government is planning a reorganisation of native authorities in England, with extra directly-elected mayors, extra unitary authorities and stronger city and parish councils, which it says will devolve energy to native folks.
In the intervening time, outdoors the primary metropolitan areas, English native authorities function in a two-tier system, with smaller district councils working underneath bigger county councils.
‘Laptop says no’
County councils’ tasks embrace schooling, social companies and waste disposal, whereas district councils are accountable for garbage assortment, housing and planning.

‘Absolute folly’

John Fuller, the Conservative chief of South Norfolk District Council, and chairman of the District Councils’ Community, mentioned: “Whether or not you might be speaking about supporting shielded residents, housing tough sleepers, getting enterprise grants to the place they’re wanted in addition to offering important companies to our communities, districts have delivered comprehensively and at velocity, as a result of we all know our residents and companies.”
“Any proposals to abolish districts and switch companies into new huge councils could be absolute folly and uproot native authorities from native communities,” he added.
