Talking within the Home of Commons, Matt Hancock stated his step-grandfather from Liverpool contracted the virus and died.
He praised the town of Liverpool for its efforts to get the outbreak “underneath management” saying it meant “greater than I can say”.
Mr Hancock was talking earlier than MPs permitted the federal government’s newest tier restrictions.
