Consultant John Lewis, the congressman and civil rights determine who died on July 17, started his lengthy journey house this weekend.
On Saturday, his family and friends remembered him at a service in Troy, Ala., the place he grew up.
His brother Samuel remembered when a younger John Lewis left house. “Mom advised him to not get in hassle, to not get in the way in which,” he recalled. “Everyone knows that John acquired in hassle, acquired in the way in which, nevertheless it was a superb hassle.”
The memorial service, on the campus of Troy College, was the beginning of a sequence of tributes that may observe Mr. Lewis’s path by life.
On Sunday, his physique will probably be carried throughout the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., the place he helped lead the demonstrators as they marched on March 7, 1965. He’ll lie in state on the U.S. Capitol on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday, he will probably be dropped at the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta. On Thursday, his funeral will probably be held in Ebenezer Baptist Church, an Atlanta sanctuary with deep ties to the civil rights motion.
