Air Canada to put off over 5,100 workers attributable to virus outbreak -union

March 20 (Reuters)Air Canada AC.TO will briefly lay off greater than 5,100 workers because it makes an attempt to test the impression of the coronavirus pandemic, the union representing the Canadian airline’s flight attendants stated on Friday.

The Canadian Union of Public Staff (CUPE) stated it was “deeply saddened” to be taught that airline would briefly lay off about 3,600 of its members at Air Canada mainline and all 1,549 of its members at Air Canada Rouge.

CUPE, which represents about 10,000 flight attendants at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, stated the layoffs have been efficient till April 30 on the earliest.

Air Canada has initiated discussions with its unions to start inserting workers on momentary, off-duty standing, the corporate advised Reuters on Friday.

“Staff can be returned to lively obligation standing once we ramp up our community schedule as circumstances permit,” the corporate stated in an emailed…
