BRASILIA, Feb 18 (Reuters) – Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday stated he was pushing a invoice via Congress to permit industrial mining and agriculture on protected indigenous lands, as he met with tribal leaders to announce a credit score line to help indigenous farmers who’ve developed soy plantations on their reservations.
The far-right chief, who has confronted criticism for his authorities’s failure to guard the Amazon rainforest, stated the credit score line would permit indigenous tribes to purchase seed, fertilizer and equipment, regardless that large-scale agriculture has hitherto been unlawful on their lands.
“Indigenous individuals can’t be caught inside their lands like prehistoric human beings,” Bolsonaro stated as he met with some 20 indigenous leaders on the gates of the presidential palace.
Talking with Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina beside him, Bolsonaro stated the credit score line would assist carry Brazil’s indigenous individuals out of poverty and assimilate them into Brazilian society.
