Egypt says sugar self-sufficiency reaches 89%


CAIRO, Aug 26 (Reuters)Egypt has reached 89% self-sufficiency in sugar following elevated planting of cane and beet and has strategic reserves to final till the following season, the availability ministry mentioned on Thursday.

Egypt’s sugar beet season runs from February to June.

The ministry additionally confirmed that imports of white and uncooked sugar had been attainable since June after a rolling ban on imports expired. Egypt is in search of 200,000 tonnes of uncooked sugar in a young.

A current rise in worldwide sugar costs had not but affected native costs in Egypt, the ministry added.

Egypt has lengthy pushed to broaden manufacturing of commodities because it seeks to include its import invoice, and has sought to bolster strategic reserves through the COVID-19 pandemic.
