JOHANNESBURG, Oct 24 (Reuters)Forty of the 46 airplanes grounded this week owing to faults on the upkeep unit of state-owned South African Airways (SAA) have been returned to service, South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Chief Government Poppy Khoza stated on Thursday.

Khoza stated SACAA had made 5 findings throughout its audit at SAA Technical, two of which have been critical.

The 2 critical findings have been that unqualified personnel had signed off on upkeep work and that upkeep checks on flight knowledge recorders and cockpit voice recorders had not been achieved accurately.

The opposite findings associated to lapses in SAA Technical’s high quality administration system and a failure to implement earlier findings by the SACAA, Khoza stated.

The SACAA has since accepted a “corrective motion plan” from SAA Technical.
