ABUJA, Nov 27 (Reuters) – Nigeria met with its West African neighbours on Tuesday over its land border closure, with the African large insisting on levying duties on items transiting to its nation via neighbouring nations to curb smuggling.
“Tuesday, there was a gathering between … the comptrollers of customs of all of the three nations concerned. We’ve got not reached any settlement … however our insistence is that we should all respect the ECOWAS protocol on transit items,” Data Minister Lai Mohammed advised reporters in Abuja.
Mohammed mentioned the protocol on obligation cost for transit items has not been adopted to the detriment of native producers.
He mentioned the federal government was putting in checks to make sure that Nigeria’s financial system won’t be overrun on account of a free commerce settlement it signed this 12 months. Nigeria plans to maintain its land borders closed till not less than January.
