WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) – United Airways UAL.O desires the federal authorities to step in to deal with congestion issues at Newark Liberty Worldwide Airport as a runway restore venture that started July 6 causes complications for a lot of summer time vacationers.
United Chief Govt Scott Kirby requested Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) chief Steve Dickson “to quickly and proportionally cut back the variety of operations per hour at Newark whereas airport capability is constrained by runway building.”
Newark, which was the 15th busiest U.S. airport in 2020 by complete passengers, has seen prolonged flight delays, lengthy taxi delays and quite a few cancellations in current weeks.
United, which has a hub on the northern New Jersey airport, flies about 65% of all Newark flights.
Within the July 15 letter, which has not been beforehand reported, Kirby mentioned that in a six-day interval in July “the common variety of (Newark) flight cancellations by all airways was greater than 100 flights per day” which positioned a “extreme pressure on workers and operations.”
Kirby informed regulators that United, which plans to renew a full schedule at Newark this fall, desires the FAA to step in to make sure that flight reductions are shared equitably among the many airways who fly out and in of the airport. He didn’t advocate returning to fit controls like these at New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports, nonetheless.
Kirby requested FAA to “deliver collectively all related events to scale back the variety of flights per hour quickly and proportionally throughout July, August, and September.”
An FAA spokeswoman mentioned the company is “reviewing the letter and can reply on to” United.
United mentioned it supported the necessity of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to work on the runways now, when site visitors stays under pre-pandemic ranges.
