Poilievre’s stance contradicts the view of the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Pierre Poilievre, the Canadian Conservative Party candidate for Prime Minister said he supports the use of Bitcoin as a legal tender in the country.
According to CoinTelegraph, a video posted by YouTube channel BITCOIN today showed Poilievre saying that Canadians should have more “financial freedom.”
The 42-year-old candidate went on to add “that includes freedom to own and use crypto, tokens, smart contracts, and decentralized finance.”
Poilievre’s stance contradicts the view of the current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who earlier this year took a strong stance against the digital currency in response to the Freedom Convoy protests that took place in Canada.
The Freedom Convoy started as protest movement against vaccine mandates and restrictions that turned to crypto as a source of funding once GoFundMe donations were frozen and returned to donators.
Koleya Karringten, executive director of the Canadian Blockchain Consortium, told CoinTelegraph that Trudeau’s Liberal Party is hostile towards crypto “due to a lack of knowledge, understanding, and regulatory clarity.”
She added that the invoking of the Emergencies Act in February, which allowed the government to take extraordinary measures to respond to public welfare issues, led to more people holding crypto.
The number of Canadians owning crypto has grown significantly in the last six years, from 3% of over 18-year-olds in 2016 to nearly 20%, according to research firm Ipsos.
Ipsos added that 25% of Canadian adults are considering buying crypto in the future.
