Derbesiyeh residents complain over new currency and rising prices -ANHA

Residents of Derbesiyeh continue to complain about the impact of the new currency being introduced into local markets, amid its limited availability and difficulties in using it, alongside rising prices of basic goods and fuel.

Resident Hamid Sheikhmous said the new currency had become one of the main problems affecting residents’ daily lives, particularly those on limited incomes. He called for clear mechanisms to allow people to exchange their money and make it easier to use the new currency.

He called for the procedures for exchanging the currency to be clarified and for the new currency to be made available at banks and exchange offices.

He explained that some bakeries and fuel stations in the city had begun refusing to accept the old currency, making it more difficult for residents to secure basic necessities.

He also pointed to rising fuel prices, saying the price of diesel had increased from around 5,000 to between 14,000 and 15,000, exceeding residents’ ability to cope with living costs.

For his part, resident Zidan Nuh said the introduction of the new currency had increased the burden on residents, while the prices of some goods had risen despite no changes to the products themselves. He said the price of some items had increased from around 100,000 to 120,000.

Nuh explained that the limited availability and use of the new currency had contributed to price discrepancies, with some traders charging higher prices when customers paid in the old currency. This has negatively affected residents and made buying and selling more difficult.

He added that using both the old and new currencies had also resulted in differences in the amounts paid for fuel. Exchanging $100 in the old currency could amount to around 1.5 million, compared with around 1.3 million in the new currency, further complicating daily transactions.

He called for the new currency to be made available in Derbesiyeh and for exchange centers to be opened to allow people to convert their money through clear and official procedures. He also called for measures to regulate prices and curb price discrepancies and exploitation.

He urged authorities to organize the currency-exchange process and ensure that the old currency remains accepted during the designated transition period, while making the new currency available at banks and exchange centers. Such measures, he said, would help reduce confusion and ease the impact on people’s living conditions.
