Kolkata: Customs on Friday seized foreign currency worth Rs 1.4 crore from four Bangladeshi nationals at Kolkata railway station — one of the biggest forex seizures by the Customs at the railway station in Kolkata in a few years.
Officers of SRI wing of Customs (preventive) came to know about two Bangladeshi nationals trying to carry foreign exchange illegally from India. The officials checked the passenger list of Maitree Express, and when two names matched, a team led by assistant commissioner Satyajit Mandal on Thursday started surveillance in the area where the duo checked into a hotel. In the early hours of Friday, the men started heading towards the station with two more Bangladeshi nationals.
The officers questioned them and discovered hollow pockets under their strolleys in which foreign currency was stashed. Apart from 95USD, 50,000 Canadian Dollars and 60,000 Australian Dollars were seized.
