The actor has come a long way since his sitcom days, demanding the attention of music enthusiasts everywhere with his music career under the Childish Gambino moniker.

His musical output has evolved significantly, and indeed, Atlanta has evolved over the years too.

Created by the man himself, the comedy-drama began premiering back in 2016 and ushered us into the life of Earnest “Earn” Marks, a struggling music manager.

The award-winning show returned for new episodes recently, but the time has already come to contemplate Atlanta season 4…

Is Atlanta renewed for season 4?

Yes, FX has officially renewed Atlanta for season 4.

The announcement was actually made when the series was renewed for the third season, with the network greenlighting a double helping of new Atlanta episodes.

Deadline reported the news, with FX chairman John Landgraf revealing that the series will end on the fourth.

“After a four-year absence, we’re graced with the return of Atlanta,” he explained. “Donald Glover and his team have shot the final two seasons of the series.”

Although a release date is yet to be confirmed, John did add that new episodes would debut in the same way as the third in the fall of 2022, telling audiences to expect the unexpected. So, there you have it. Atlanta is returning in 2022, but won’t be back in 2023.

Why is Atlanta ending?

It’s important to highlight that Atlanta wasn’t cancelled. Rather, Donald Glover felt that season 4 was the right place to end the series.

While attending the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Variety reports that Donald explained how he came to the decision to close the book on Atlanta:

“Death is natural. I feel like when the conditions are right for something, they happen, and when the conditions aren’t right, they don’t happen. I don’t feel any longevity. Because then things start to get weird. The story was always supposed to be what it was. And the story, it really was us.”

He continued: “Everybody in that writers’ room, everybody on set. It really was what we were going through and what we talked about… I think it ends perfectly.”

Although some shows are kept going for as long as possible, it’s overt that Donald would rather have his show burn out on a satisfying note than fade away into tedium – if you can even imagine such a scenario with a show like this.

Atlanta season 3 was made up of 10 episodes in total.

The tenth and final episode of the latest season premiered on FX on Thursday, May 19th 2022.
