As ever, there’s an overwhelming amount of prestige TV to keep up with, but you’ll want to pay attention to this upcoming series from FX. The cable channel announced this week that it’s developing an adaptation of Kindred, the influential 1979 novel by Octavia E. Butler.

The eight-episode series centers on Dana, a young Black woman aspiring writer who’s just relocated to Los Angeles to chase her dreams, uprooting a life that’s always been defined by her obligation to her family. But per FX’s synopsis, “before she can get settled into her new home, she finds herself being violently pulled back and forth in time to a nineteenth-century plantation with which she and her family are surprisingly and intimately linked. An interracial romance threads through her past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront the secrets she never knew ran through her blood, in this genre-breaking exploration of the ties that bind.”

The series stars newcomer Mallori Johnson, alongside Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and David Alexander Kaplan. There’s also an impressive behind-the-scenes team on board—Pulitzer-nominated playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins will write and serve as showrunner, while Darren Aronofsky will executive produce alongside Jacobs-Jenkins, Courtney Lee-Mitchell,Ari Handel, Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Ernestine Walker and Merrilee Heifetz. The pilot was directed and executive produced by Janicza Bravo, who’s best known for directing and co-writing last year’s Zola.

“Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has done a phenomenal job of adapting Kindred for FX and honoring the legacy and timeless value of Octavia Butler’s groundbreaking novel,” Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX, said in the announcement. “The pilot directed by Janicza Bravo is brilliant and we can’t wait to resume production with this incredibly talented and dedicated cast.”
