The creators behind US cable channel FX’s Reservation Dogs have confirmed that the upcoming third season of the half-hour Indigenous teen comedy-drama will be its last.

Creators, writers and exec producers Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi (Our Flag Means Death) and exec producer Garrett Basch (The Night Of, What We Do in the Shadows) announced the news at the end of last week.

The third and final season will premiere on August 2 exclusively on Hulu with the first two episodes, while the first two seasons of Reservation Dogs are currently available to stream on Hulu under FX branding. The show is produced by FX Productions.

Debuting on FX in 2021, Reservation Dogs is the first US series to feature all Indigenous writers and directors, along with an almost entirely Indigenous North American cast and production team. It is also the first series to be filmed entirely in Oklahoma.

Disney-owned FX responded to the creators’ decision to end the series by saying: “People throw around the words ‘historic’ and ‘groundbreaking’ far too often and without merit: Reservation Dogs is worthy of those superlatives.

“Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi created one of the most important TV shows ever made. They gave the world a wholly unique, original and honest portrayal of Native people – one that has never before been seen in television or film.”
