NASA and SpaceX plan to launch the corporate’s first full mission with astronauts no sooner than Oct. 23, the company introduced on Friday.
Often called Crew-1, the mission will see three U.S. astronauts and one Japanese astronaut launch in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule to the Worldwide Area Station. There they’ll spend six months on the area station, conducting analysis and performing duties.
The Crew Dragon capsule will carry NASA’s Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and JAXA’s Soichi Noguchi. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that can carry the capsule arrived in Florida in July, to organize for the Crew-1 launch.
NASA and SpaceX had beforehand deliberate to launch Crew-1 in late September. The one month delay is because of “spacecraft site visitors,” NASA stated, as a Russian Soyuz spacecraft is about to launch to the ISS in October. The company additionally stated that pushing again the Crew-1 launch will enable “for a crew handover” on board the area station. The six month timeline for Crew-1 implies that capsule shall be docked till late April, overlapping with the SpaceX Crew-2 mission set to launch in spring 2021.

The announcement comes about two weeks after the profitable completion of the SpaceX Demo-2 check flight, which carried a pair of NASA astronauts within the firm’s first ever crewed mission.
