The former prime minister began his evidence with an apology, which was interrupted by protesters.
Boris Johnson said he “understands the feelings of these victims and their families” and that he was “deeply sorry”.
Mr Johnson said he believed he and his government “got some things wrong” and appeared to choke up when he described 2020 as a “tragic, tragic year”.
He told Hugo Keith KC that he had not removed any WhatsApp messages from his phone, and that the lock down in March 2020 was absolutely necessary.
