Commonwealth leaders reject second time period for Baroness Scotland

Commonwealth governments have rejected a contemporary try to present their secretary-general, Baroness Scotland, an automated second time period.

In a letter seen by the BBC, Boris Johnson says a “important and numerous quantity” had opposed the concept.

He mentioned they “desire that the choice on the following substantive secretary-general appointment must be taken at CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Authorities Assembly), in line with our established follow”.

He went on to suggest that Girl Scotland’s present contract is prolonged till the leaders meet.

A Commonwealth spokesman mentioned: “A member state wrote to the chair-in-office to request that heads of presidency contemplate reappointment now because of the uncertainty of when CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Authorities Assembly) will be capable of happen because of the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic.

“The chair-in-office wrote to member states on eight June 2020 to state that consensus was not reached for reappointment to happen now within the absence of CHOGM.”

A UK authorities spokeswoman mentioned: “We do not touch upon personal correspondence between Commonwealth member states.

“Choices on the appointment of secretaries-general are a matter for heads of presidency. Previously, these selections have been made at CHOGMs.”

She added the UK authorities will work with different Commonwealth nations on the method of appointing the following secretary-general.
