Dame Louise Casey: Households ‘face interval of destitution’

The Covid-19 pandemic will result in a "interval of destitution" until extra motion is taken, the federal government's former homelessness adviser

The Covid-19 pandemic will result in a “interval of destitution” until extra motion is taken, the federal government’s former homelessness adviser has warned.

Dame Louise Casey mentioned a authorities scheme to pay staff in shut-down companies two-thirds of their wages is “not going to chop it”.

Talking to BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Dame Louise mentioned there have been already “too many individuals in low paid jobs”.

The Treasury mentioned its “precedence” was to guard jobs and incomes and it had made “our welfare system extra beneficiant”.
