General election live: Runak and Starmer clash on tax and NHS in head-to-head debate – BBC News

    BreakingBreaking news

    Summary

    1. Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer had their first head-to-head TV debate of the election campaign last night
    2. Both leaders were told to lower their voices during heated moments as they covered tax, healthcare and immigration
    3. Sunak repeatedly claimed Labour would put up taxes by £2,000 – which Labour rejects, as the figures are based on Tory advisers’ assumptions
    4. Starmer said waiting lists had gone up since January 2023, when Sunak pledged to cut them – the PM said they are coming down now
    5. Asked if they would use private healthcare for a loved one needing surgery, Sunak replied yes, while Starmer said no
    6. Senior figures from the Liberal Democrats, SNP, Reform UK and Greens took part in live interviews after the debate
