    BreakingBreaking news

    Summary

    1. Sir Keir Starmer says Britain would be “fit to fight” under Labour as he outlines the party’s defence plans during a campaign visit to meet veterans
    2. He reaffirms Labour’s commitment to a “nuclear deterrent triple lock”, which would include the building of four new nuclear submarines
    3. Meanwhile the Conservatives have pledged to tackle the “confusion” over the legal definition of sex by amending the Equality Act if they win the election
    4. Equalities minister Kemi Badenoch tells the BBC the intentions in the law have been misinterpreted recently because of “social changes”
    5. The Lib Dems call the proposal a “cynical distraction” from the Tories’ “failings”, accusing the party of “waging phony culture wars”
    6. The first televised leadership debate of the general election will take place at 21:00 BST featuring leaders from the SNP, Scottish Conservatives, Scottish Labour and Scottish Liberal Democrats
    7. It comes as the BBC has announced the dates for its election TV debates, which include a head-to-head clash between Rishi Sunak and Starmer days before polling day
