The Labour Party has won a key by-election in Scotland after polling twice as many votes as the SNP.

Michael Shanks, a modern studies teacher and runner, was voted in as the new MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

The ballot was triggered after locals voted to oust former their former MP Margaret Ferrier, who breached Covid rules in 2020.

The BBC’s Kirsten Campbell spent the night at the count and explains the significance of the result.
