MPs have held a minute’s silence in reminiscence of George Floyd, the black man whose loss of life in US police custody has sparked a world wave of protests.

The Home of Commons chamber, in addition to digital committee hearings, fell silent at 11am on Tuesday.

Since Mr Floyd’s killing on 25 Could, protests have been held throughout the UK.

The prime minister has urged individuals to “work peacefully, lawfully” to defeat racism and discrimination.

On Monday, Dwelling Secretary Priti Patel instructed MPs that, whereas most demonstrators acted peacefully, “justice will comply with” for any who engaged in violence.

Mr Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for over eight minutes.
