Final night time, the veteran ITN information presenter Alastair Stewart introduced that he was stepping down, after he was accused of racism when he quoted a Shakespeare passage to a member of the general public on-line. In a press release following his departure, ITN stated Stewart had made ‘errors of judgment in his use of social media’.

The Shakespeare passage, from Measure for Measure, included the phrase ‘indignant ape’, and was directed at a black man. However, quickly after his departure it was found that Stewart had quoted the passage earlier than, and in a press release this afternoon, the person who had complained in regards to the newscaster’s behaviour, stated that ‘a personal apology would have been greater than adequate to attract a line beneath’ the incident

Already a backlash appears to be mounting at ITN bosses, who unceremoniously dumped Stewart, regardless of him working on the organisation for many years. In response, a petition has been launched on-line, calling for Stewart to be given his job again. The petition has already reached over 3,000 signatures from members of the general public.
