MP Jonathan Edwards has been suspended from Plaid Cymru for 12 months after he accepted a police warning.

The Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP was arrested on 20 Could on suspicion of assault.

On Wednesday Plaid Cymru’s disciplinary panel suspended him from the get together saying it was a “severe matter”.

The 44-year-old MP, who has described the incident because the “largest remorse” of his life, stated he absolutely accepted the choice of the panel.

Mr Edwards referred himself to the get together’s inner disciplinary committee following his arrest, and had the whip withdrawn.

Now he shall be suspended from the get together for 12 months, that means he shall be successfully sitting as an unbiased MP.

In an announcement the disciplinary panel stated: “Any lifting of the suspension after 12 months relies upon Mr Edwards showing earlier than the panel to show that he has undertaken a interval of self-reflection and studying to deal with his actions”.

On the time of the warning Mr Edwards stated: “I’m deeply sorry. It’s by far the most important remorse of my life.”

An announcement on behalf of his spouse, Emma Edwards, stated: “I’ve accepted my husband’s apology.

Plaid Cymru stated Mr Edwards had “co-operated absolutely with the investigation” by the panel.

Alun Ffred Jones, the chairman of Plaid Cymru, stated the get together “condemns any behaviour that falls under what is anticipated of our membership”.
