PMQs latest: Sunak rejects calls for immediate general election – BBC News

    BreakingBreaking news

    Summary

    1. Rishi Sunak has rejected Labour’s call for a general election now – and says his “working assumption” is still the second half of the year
    2. During Prime Minister’s Questions earlier, Sir Keir Starmer claimed the PM was “scared” of facing voters over his record on immigration and mortgage rates
    3. The exchange came after figures showed inflation fell to 3.4% in February – a slightly bigger drop than economists had predicted
    4. Sunak says the latest figures show “we need to stick to the plan to deliver a brighter future for our country” but Starmer asks why he hasn’t called an election yet
    5. Starmer called the PM’s plan to deport some asylum seekers to Rwanda a “gimmick” – while the PM said Labour “don’t care” about “fixing” illegal migration
    6. Sunak’s flagship Rwanda deportation bill could face further delay, as peers vows to try and change it again in the Lords
    7. Sunak is expected to call for backbenchers to “pull together” when he addresses the influential 1922 committee at 17:00 GMT
