Rwanda bill latest: MPs and Lords in showdown as Sunak promises flights by July – BBC News

    BreakingBreaking news

    Summary

    1. Parliament passes PM Rishi Sunak’s flagship Rwanda bill, after a late-night sitting and months of wrangling
    2. The Lords abandoned their final battle over one amendment – or change – to the bill, which focussed on the safety of the country
    3. Lord Sharpe, speaking for the government, said the bill had been scrutinised a number of times and the Lords must accept the will of the elected House
    4. Reacting to the passage of the bill, Home Secretary James Cleverly called it a “landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats”
    5. But rights groups say the bill “trashes international law” while “putting torture survivors and other refugees at risk”
    6. Sunak says flights taking some asylum seekers to Rwanda will set off in “10-12 weeks”
    7. The plan – designed to deter migrants crossing the Channel in small boats – was announced in 2022, but no flights have set off
