Even by current requirements, 2019 was an eventful 12 months in Westminster. It started with impasse in Parliament and it was unclear whether or not we’d ever go away the EU, and ended with a Brexit breakthrough, a brand new prime minister, and even a common election – with mass defections, serial resignations and all the standard machinations alongside the best way. So, it was maybe with a way of aid that politicians headed to The Spectator’s Parliamentarian of the 12 months awards tonight, to toast the politicians who made an affect, and have fun that the 12 months is lastly over.

The visitor of honour at tonight’s awards was the indefatigable ex-Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who began the proceedings off by gently ribbing the previous Chancellor Phillip Hammond, noting that ‘given his popularity for having the ability to rain on any parade, suck the oxygen out of the room and put a dampener on issues, civil contingencies are about to deploy him to Australia’.

Whereas Nigel Farage, when accepting the award for disruptor of the last decade, assured the Westminster village that ‘except this Authorities drops the ball, and I don’t assume it can, you’ll by no means, ever see me once more’.
