Botswana bans poultry imports from South Africa after avian flu outbreak

GABORONE, April 14 (Reuters)Botswana has banned the importation of poultry and poultry merchandise from South Africa after an outbreak of avian influenza was detected on a rooster farm in South Africa, the agriculture ministry mentioned on Wednesday.

South Africa mentioned on Tuesday that round 300 birds died of avian flu on the business chicken-layer farm in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, with samples from the farm testing constructive for the H5 pressure.

“Consequently, the import of domesticated and wild birds, their merchandise (meat, eggs and feathers), from South Africa is banned with rapid impact,” Botswana’s Ministry of Agricultural Improvement and Meals Safety mentioned in an announcement.

After an outbreak of the extremely pathogenic H5N8 pressure of avian flu in 2017, which noticed poultry farmers culling tens of millions of birds, neighbouring international locations together with Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana banned poultry imports from South Africa.

Botswana authorities warned the general public to be vigilant and to report any deaths of home poultry and wild birds to veterinary places of work.
