FOCUS-Deere employees grapple with fallout from Trump’s commerce conflict

EAST MOLINE, Illinois, Nov 15 (Reuters)Devin Spencer has been on edge ever since Deere & Co. DE.N laid off dozens of his colleagues at its Harvester Works plant in western Illinois as a result of dwindling demand for farm combines.

He considers himself fortunate to have escaped the indefinite layoffs, however has been relegated to a lower-level job with a pay minimize. The 29-year-old welder blames America’s commerce conflict with China, which has dented U.S. agricultural exports and, in flip, slowed gross sales of apparatus, for his scenario.

Spencer, who’s married with a younger son, fears the worst if gross sales proceed to sag and Deere cuts extra employees. He’s not alone. Tons of of employees at Harvester Works are dealing with an unsure future because of the 16-month-old tariff conflict.

“Orders have sunk so low that I’m fortunate to have a job,” he mentioned. “What occurs if we do not get orders? I’m out of the door.”
