India permits GM soymeal imports by way of three extra ports


NEW DELHI, Sept 3 (Reuters)India on Friday allowed imports of genetically modified (GM) soymeal by way of three extra ports, based on a authorities order seen by Reuters, facilitating abroad purchases of the animal feed in massive volumes.

New Delhi final month allowed imports of GM soymeal for the primary time to assist the poultry trade, which is reeling from a surge in native soymeal costs that tripled in a 12 months to a file excessive.

However the authorities permitted abroad purchases of the animal feed solely by way of the Nhava Sheva Port, primarily for containers. Merchants stated the restriction slowed down imports.

Friday’s authorities order stated that moreover the Nhava Sheva Port, merchants might now import soymeal by way of the Mumbai Sea Port, the Tuticorin Sea Port and the Visakhapatnam Sea Port.

Reuters on Wednesday reported that India has contracted to import 250,000 tonnes of soymeal, together with 15,000 tonnes that Indian sellers had shipped out solely two months in the past.
