Updates with begin of strike

MEXICO CITY, Jan 8 (Reuters)Unionized staff at Mexican airline Interjet went on strike on Friday, a union spokesman stated, after weeks of flight cancellations as the corporate struggles to keep up operations through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Movies shared on social media confirmed teams of hanging employees at Interjet counters in Mexico Metropolis’s Benito Juarez Worldwide Airport and out of doors Toluca Worldwide Airport, about 41 miles (66 km) away.

The vast majority of staff voted to strike on the firm’s premises in Mexico Metropolis to recoup some wages and advantages by way of the union, the Seccion 15 employees union stated in a press release.

Interjet staff are owed 4 months of wage and different wages, together with Christmas bonuses and financial savings fund contributions for 2020, the union stated.

Like many airways, Interjet has suffered extreme disruptions due to the pandemic. All of the airline’s flights and operations have been suspended since final month, the union stated.

In November Interjet cancelled a number of flights after reportedly lacking advance funds on jet gasoline for the second time in two months.

The union stated Interjet missed out on a ultimate alternative to maintain its operations operating after Mexico’s tax authority (SAT) declined to maneuver ahead with a debt negotiation that will have enabled the airline to take out loans.

“The present scenario is regrettable,” the union stated. “We see that there aren’t any planes to fly and no actual marketing strategy to proceed working.”

A spokesman for Interjet didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.

“Nobody can blame (the staff) for the, hopefully non permanent, closure of Interjet,” the union stated. “We deeply remorse the failure that this final result represents for Mexico and nationwide aviation, simply after the corporate turned 15 years previous.”
