Staff at Mexico’s Interjet to strike after weeks of flight cancellations

MEXICO CITY, Jan 8 (Reuters)Unionized workers for Mexican airline Interjet will start a strike on Friday after weeks of flight cancellations as the corporate struggles to take care of operations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Confronted with the potential of looting,” the Seccion 15 staff union mentioned in a press release, the vast majority of workers voted to strike on the firm’s premises in Mexico Metropolis with a view to recoup some wages and advantages by the union.

Interjet workers are owed 4 months of wage and different wages, together with Christmas bonuses and financial savings fund contributions for 2020, the union mentioned.

Like many airways, Interjet has suffered extreme disruptions due to the pandemic. All of the airline’s flights have been canceled and operations suspended since final month, the union mentioned.

In November, Interjet canceled a number of flights after reportedly lacking advance funds on jet gas for the second time in two months.

The union mentioned Interjet missed out on a remaining alternative to maintain its operations afloat after Mexico’s tax authority (SAT) declined to maneuver ahead with a debt negotiation that might have enabled the airline to take out loans.

“The present state of affairs of our firm is regrettable,” the union mentioned. “We see that there aren’t any planes to fly and no actual marketing strategy to proceed working.”

A spokesman for Interjet didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.

“Nobody can blame (the staff) for the, hopefully momentary, closure of Interjet,” the union mentioned. “We deeply remorse the failure that this final result represents for Mexico and nationwide aviation, simply after the corporate turned 15 years previous.”
